Planning to study in Canada in 2027 involves many important steps: securing university admission, arranging tuition fees, preparing financial documents and submitting a Canadian study permit application. One requirement students often overlook is the Canada student visa medical examination.
For most Bangladeshi students planning to stay in Canada for more than six months, an immigration medical examination is part of the study permit process. But did you know there are two ways to complete it?
- Wait for an IRCC medical request: submit your study permit application and complete the exam when Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sends you medical instructions.
- Complete an upfront medical examination: do the exam with an approved doctor before you submit your study permit application.
Choosing the right option can make a real difference, especially if your university intake is close. In this guide, WEMS explains both options, when an upfront medical makes sense, and how to find IRCC-approved medical centres in Bangladesh.
Quick answer for 2027 intakes: If you need a medical exam and your programme starts in about two months or less, consider completing an upfront medical with an IRCC-approved panel physician before you apply. If you have more time, waiting for IRCC’s medical request is also a reasonable option.
1. What Is a Canadian Immigration Medical Examination?
An Immigration Medical Examination (IME) is a health assessment that IRCC uses to decide whether an applicant meets Canada’s medical admissibility requirements. Only an IRCC-approved doctor, known as a panel physician, can perform it. Your family doctor or a regular hospital cannot do it unless the doctor is listed in IRCC’s official directory.
Who needs a medical exam for a Canadian study permit?
According to IRCC, if you plan to stay in Canada for six months or less, you generally do not need a medical exam unless you plan to work in certain jobs where public health must be protected. If you plan to stay for more than six months, you need one if at least one of the following applies:
- You lived in or travelled to certain listed countries or territories for six months or more in a row in the year before you come to Canada.
- You plan to work in a job where public health must be protected, such as health care, clinical laboratories, schools, child care or in-home caregiving.
Important for Bangladeshi students: Bangladesh is on IRCC’s list of countries and territories where an immigration medical exam is required. This means most students applying from Bangladesh for a degree or diploma programme longer than six months will need a medical exam. Always check your own situation before booking an appointment.

2. What Is an IRCC Medical Request?
An IRCC medical request is an official instruction asking you to complete an immigration medical exam after you have applied. The process generally works like this:
- You submit your Canadian study permit application.
- IRCC reviews your application.
- If a medical exam is required, IRCC sends you instructions, including the medical report form.
- You book an appointment with an IRCC-approved panel physician.
- You complete the medical examination.
- The panel physician sends your results to IRCC.
- IRCC continues processing your application.
The key point is that you cannot complete this step until IRCC sends the request. That waiting time, plus the time needed to book and complete the exam, can add delays when your intake is approaching.
3. What Is a Canada Upfront Medical Examination?
An upfront medical examination means completing the immigration medical exam before you submit your study permit application, without waiting for IRCC to ask for it. IRCC allows this for people applying to visit, work or study in Canada.
You contact an IRCC-approved panel physician directly and complete the exam. The panel physician then gives you a document confirming that your medical exam was completed, and sends the results to IRCC. You must include a copy of this confirmation document with your study permit application. If you apply online, you upload it with your application.
Why do students choose an upfront medical?
The main reason is time. IRCC’s study permit application guide states that when medical results are submitted upfront, routine cases benefit from faster processing. Because the medical step is already done, IRCC does not need to issue a separate medical request later.
The same guide also warns that if you complete an upfront medical but do not submit proof with your application, it may cause processing delays. So make sure the confirmation document is uploaded.
However, an upfront medical does not guarantee faster processing or study permit approval.
4. When Should Students Do an Upfront Medical?
This is one of the most important decisions to make before you submit your Canadian study permit application. At WEMS, we particularly recommend considering an upfront medical when there is limited time left before your university intake.
Example: a student with only two months before classes begin
Imagine a student who has received admission to a Canadian university for the January intake and has about two months left before classes start.
If the student submits the study permit application without completing the medical exam, IRCC may issue a medical request later. The student will then need to:
- Wait to receive the medical request.
- Book an appointment with an approved panel physician.
- Complete the medical examination.
- Wait for the results to be sent to IRCC and assessed.
Depending on appointment availability and whether any further tests are needed, these extra steps can add weeks to an already tight timeline. Completing the medical upfront removes this waiting period from the process.
WEMS recommendation
If you need a medical exam and have approximately two months or less before your programme starts, WEMS recommends considering an upfront medical before you submit your study permit application. Please note: this two-month guideline is WEMS’s practical planning advice based on our experience, not an official IRCC deadline or requirement.
An upfront medical is especially useful when:
- Your university intake is approaching.
- You have about two months or less before classes begin.
- You want to avoid waiting for a separate medical request.
- Your study permit documents are almost ready.
Also think about timing: medical results are valid for 12 months, so avoid doing the exam too early if your intake is far away.
5. Upfront Medical vs Medical Request: Which Is Better?
Both approaches are accepted by IRCC. The better option depends on your timeline and circumstances.
| Factor | Upfront Medical | IRCC Medical Request |
|---|---|---|
| When it is done | Before you submit your application | After IRCC sends medical instructions |
| Who starts it | The student | IRCC |
| Appointment | Booked in advance | Booked after receiving the request |
| Results | Panel physician sends results to IRCC; you upload the confirmation document with your application | Panel physician sends results to IRCC |
| Main advantage | No separate medical request needed later | You follow IRCC’s instructions after submission; no early planning required |
| Best for | Students with tight intake timelines | Students with enough time before their intake |
Our suggestion: students with an approaching intake should consider an upfront medical if they need one. For students with plenty of time, waiting for IRCC’s medical instructions is also a reasonable choice.
6. Canada Visa Medical Centre in Bangladesh: IRCC-Approved Panel Physicians
You cannot complete a Canadian immigration medical exam at just any hospital or diagnostic centre. You must visit an IRCC-approved panel physician. IRCC is Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the Government of Canada department that approves panel physicians. (Do not confuse IRCC with an RCIC, a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant; RCICs do not approve doctors.)
IRCC publishes an official directory of approved doctors and clinics for every country:

The directory also lists IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre locations in Cox’s Bazar (Ukhiya and Teknaf). Note that the directory states the IOM centres provide services paid by Canada’s Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP); students should contact the clinic directly to confirm whether it accepts study permit applicants.
Good to know: IRCC says you can choose a panel physician anywhere in the world, not only in your home country. Medical exam fees are paid by the applicant at the appointment and can differ between doctors. A specific panel physician may not always be available, and the clinic may suggest an alternate approved doctor. Do not rely on clinic lists shared on social media or unofficial websites. Read more in IRCC’s guidance: How can I find a doctor to do my immigration medical exam?
7. Documents Required for Your Canada Medical Examination
Contact the clinic before your appointment to confirm its requirements. Based on IRCC guidance, you should generally bring:
- Proper identification: IRCC strongly recommends your passport. A national ID card may also be accepted.
- Glasses or contact lenses, if you wear them.
- Medical reports or test results for any previous or existing medical conditions.
- A list of the medications you currently take.
- The medical report form (IMM 1017E) that IRCC sent you, if you are attending because of a medical request rather than an upfront exam.
- Four recent photographs, only if the panel physician does not use IRCC’s eMedical system.
- Vaccination records, if available. These are encouraged but not mandatory.
8. Medical Examination Processing: How Long Does It Take?
The appointment itself and the processing of your results are two different things. The time needed for the appointment depends on the clinic, the tests required and your health history.
After the exam, the panel physician sends the results directly to IRCC. In some cases, additional tests or a specialist consultation may be required before IRCC can complete its assessment. So do not assume that finishing the appointment means your medical clearance is immediately complete. Planning ahead is especially important when your intake is approaching.
9. How Long Are Canadian Immigration Medical Results Valid?
According to IRCC, immigration medical exam results are valid for 12 months. For students, the expiry date of the medical exam is shown on the letter of introduction issued when the study permit application is approved.
If you do not travel to Canada within the validity period, you may need to complete a new medical exam. Plan the timing of your exam carefully. Source: IRCC – Medical exam requirements for temporary residents.
10. Does an Upfront Medical Guarantee Canada Study Permit Approval?
No. An upfront medical only completes the medical requirement in advance. It does not guarantee:
- Study permit approval.
- A faster visa decision.
- A positive medical assessment.
- Exemption from any other immigration requirement.
IRCC assesses your entire application, including your academic background, financial capacity, study plan and other requirements. Focus on preparing a complete, well-documented application. 11. Frequently Asked Questions About the Canada Student Visa Medical Examination
Is an upfront medical examination mandatory for a Canada student visa?
No. If you need an immigration medical exam, you can either complete it upfront before you apply or wait for IRCC to send you medical instructions after you submit your study permit application.
Do Bangladeshi students need a medical exam for a Canadian study permit?
In most cases, yes, if they plan to stay in Canada for more than six months. Bangladesh is on IRCC’s list of countries and territories where an immigration medical exam is required, so students who have lived in Bangladesh for six months or more in a row in the year before coming to Canada generally need one. Always confirm your own situation on the official IRCC website.
Can I complete my medical examination before submitting my study permit application?
Yes. IRCC allows applicants for a study permit, work permit or visitor visa to complete an upfront medical exam with an IRCC-approved panel physician. You must then include a copy of the document confirming the exam was completed with your application.
What happens if I do not complete an upfront medical examination?
If you need a medical exam, IRCC will send you instructions after you apply. You will then book an appointment with a panel physician and complete the exam according to those instructions.
How long are Canadian immigration medical results valid?
Immigration medical exam results are valid for 12 months. For students, the expiry date is shown on the letter of introduction issued when the study permit is approved.
Can I complete my medical examination at any hospital in Bangladesh?
No. Only an IRCC-approved panel physician can perform the immigration medical exam. Your family doctor or a regular hospital cannot do it unless the doctor is listed in the official IRCC Panel Physician Directory.
I have already submitted my study permit application. Should I do an upfront medical now?
An upfront medical is completed before you apply. If you have already submitted your application without one, follow the instructions IRCC gives you for your application rather than booking a separate exam on your own.
Does an upfront medical help me get a faster Canadian study permit decision?
IRCC states that routine cases benefit from faster processing when medical results are submitted upfront, because no separate medical request is needed. However, it does not guarantee a faster decision or approval, as IRCC still assesses your full application.
Should I complete an upfront medical if my classes start in two months?
If you need a medical exam and your programme starts in about two months or less, WEMS recommends considering an upfront medical so that you do not have to wait for a separate medical request after applying. This is WEMS’s practical advice, not an official IRCC rule.
Where can I do the Canada student visa medical test in Bangladesh?
Use the official IRCC Panel Physician Directory, select Bangladesh and click Go. As of November 2026, the directory lists approved panel physicians in Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar.
Final Thoughts: Plan Your Canada Study Permit Application Wisely
A successful Canadian study permit application depends on careful planning. If you have enough time before your intake, waiting for IRCC’s medical instructions can be a reasonable option. If your classes start soon and you need a medical exam, completing an upfront medical before you apply can help you avoid an extra waiting step.
A little planning before you submit can prevent unnecessary delays later. To see how this works in practice, read our Study in Canada 2027 guide with real WEMS visa success stories, or start with how to study in Canada from Bangladesh.
